Sports anglers who like to fish in smaller coves that larger vessels can’t get into will want to check out the latest ocean kayak from Johnson Outdoors. The Torque kayak is a merger between the Minn Kota and Ocean Kayak. Johnson Outdoors owns both lines, which helped in the design efforts for the new kayak.

When you’re shopping for sport fishing supplies, you’ll want to consider what areas you plan to fish in, such as kelp beds, shallows, or reefs. Kayaks also allow you to reach destinations with inaccessible shorelines. If this is your preferred method of fishing, be sure to add the Torque kayak to your wish list.

The Torque kayak features a 36-pound, thrust-trolling motor. A 12-volt battery designed for a marine environment powers the motor and allows the kayak to reach speeds of 5.5 mph. If you like to troll, you’ll enjoy the adjustable speed control. You can also reverse the direction of the kayak with the motor’s reverse feature. The integrated dashboard hosts a kill switch, so you can quickly cut the motor if you see fish hopping in an upcoming area.

Other features for the Torque kayak include an extra large rudder to assist with steering, a large bow hatch, and transducer-compatible scuppers. For added convenience, the motor is removable. Without it, the Torque kayak weighs 71 pounds when it’s empty. With the motor and battery, the weight increases to 86 pounds. At 13 feet in length, the kayak provides enough room for you and your fishing gear.

At a cost of $2,000, the Torque kayak competes with other sports fishing kayaks. With the cost being lower than a larger boat and the increased accessibility you can gain, the Torque kayak may turn out to be your favorite piece of sports fishing equipment.
